30 Gas-Saving Tips for Drivers - We Compiled Every Single One We Could Find!

Gas prices are going down! What a relief. But, anything above $3 per gallon still feels too painful. It's not time to give up on those extra gas-saving measures, yet. (Not that it ever should be.)

So here is every tip for saving fuel that's out there -- the simple ones that can be put to use today without a lot of expense. So, barring those obvious (and expensive) "buy a hybrid car" and "convert an old diesel to bio-diesel" suggestions, these are the things drivers and environmentalists agree will save drivers some money and save the world some pollution.

Top 30 Gas-Saving Tips for Drivers

1. Slow down. The faster we drive the more fuel we consume. Slowing to 20 mpg would defeat the purpose of driving, of course. Lead foots, though, should keep their speed in check. Driving 75 mph consumes 20% more fuel than driving 65 mph.
2. Stop braking... as much. A moving car consumes less fuel than an accelerating one. In heavy traffic it's smart to leave plenty of distance between you and the car ahead. Settle into a speed that allows you to coast along slowly, because constantly braking and accelerating again - even at low speeds - reduces your gas mileage by 10% to 20%.
3. Aggressive driving? It's unsafe and guzzles gas! Weaving in and out of lanes increases your braking and accelerating. (See #2.)
4. Easy turns. If you need to slow down before turning a corner or bend, brake before turning. Coast into the turn and you'll benefit from the car's momentum as you accelerate afterwards.
5. Stop flooring it. Jack rabbit starts eat up more fuel, too.
6. Avoid stops. No, we're not suggesting rolling through STOP signs and red lights. Travel a route that's short and requires the fewest stops. Remember how accelerating uses more fuel? (See #2.)
7. Move forward. Avoid driving in reverse as much as possible.
8. Turn right. Waiting to turn left requires idling.
9. Turn off. Sure, it's exhausting to get out of the car and walk in to a building for your morning coffee, but it consumes less fuel than if you idle in the drive-through line for more than 30 seconds (especially with the A/C running). The same applies for the school pick-up lane, ATM withdrawals, traffic jams, etc.
10. Buy regular. Some car manuals suggest otherwise. But if your car has no fuel specification, buy the cheaper stuff; it won't make a difference in the way your car runs.
11. Wake up! Hit the gas station early in the day when the air is cool. Gas is measured by volume, and cooler gas is the densest; you'll get the most fuel for your buck in the morning.
12. Don't top off. Trying to squeeze that very last drop of gasoline into the tank after the pump has shut off just leads to spillage and evaporation.
13. Upside down? Yes! Turn the fuel pump nozzle upside down before removing it from your tank. You've paid for the fuel that remains in the nozzle; so use it!
14. Tighten up. The gas cap keeps fuel from evaporating out of your fuel tank and, still, 17% of vehicles on the road have loose or broken gas caps!
15. Pay cash. Many truck stops and highway travel centers charge a little bit more per gallon when you pay with a charge card.
16. Travel light. Leaving odds and ends in the trunk, in the backseat and on the floor adds weight to your vehicle. Lighter vehicles consume less gas. Emergency supplies and the spare tire are important, but all that other stuff can go. Remove bike and ski racks when they're not being used.
17. Pump up. Under-inflated tires don't roll properly.
18. Get in line. Aligned tires are more fuel-efficient than tires that pull every which way. Driving on unbalanced or misaligned tires creates drag.
19. Heavy metal. Steel-belted radial tires increase fuel efficiency by 10%!
20. LRR. Look for tires rated for "low rolling resistance." They could improve fuel efficiency by 7%.
21. O/D. Use it during highway driving.
22. Cruise control. Use it on smooth highway drives, but not bumpy, winding roads or short trips.
23. Replace the spark plugs.
24. Clean air. Change the air filter regularly, but not necessarily every time someone tells you to.
25. Maintain the proper oil level. It reduces friction and that reduces fuel consumption.
26. De-ice. In wintertime, remove icicles from your car frame. Snow and ice are heavy additions to your vehicle.
27. No A/C. It's unanimous that air conditioning use reduces fuel economy up to 20%
28. Get polished. A shiny clean and waxed car creates less wind resistance!
29. Park inside. Or in the shade. The warm sunlight heats up your car and causes fuel evaporation.
30. Roll up the windows/Roll down the windows. There seem to be equal arguments for both, so we encourage you to do your own testing and decide what works best for you!

Money has been very tight over the last few years. As a result many people are neglecting to keep up with the routine maintenance on their cars. While all of us would like our cars to start each time we turn the key and stop every time we press the brake and run like new all the time, that is not the case. They need maintenance in order to continue to run smoothly. Spending a little time and money on maintaining your car will help it to provide you with years of service.

Replacing the fluids in the car and maintaining them at the proper levels is very important in ensuring that the car runs well and for many miles. That does not just include the motor oil and anti-freeze, but also the transmission fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and differential fluid. Replacing them is more than just topping off the fluids in the car when they get low. Over time the fluids degrade, get dirty and lose their effectiveness. If you do not replace them when needed, your car will end up needing a new engine, transmission, radiator, power steering pump, master cylinder, camshaft, etc. All of those repairs are very expensive and cost much more than just replacing the fluid.

The owner's manual for your vehicle will give you recommendations for when to change the various fluids and the specific type of fluid you should use. If you do not have an owner's manual, most car makers now post them online at their website.

One maintenance tip that does not cost anything is to simply pop the hood regularly and examine the condition of the belts, hoses and fluids. Replace any belts or hoses that show signs of wear and tear. Replacing them is much cheaper than repairing the damage they will do to your vehicle if they break. If any of the fluids are low, you need to investigate the cause of the leak. Replace any fluids that are dirty.

When you take car in the shop for an oil change, you should have the mechanic rotate the tires, check their air pressure and check the brakes, cv joints, etc. Taking care of these things when they first begin will keep you from spending a lot of money in repairs if you neglect them. Many larger repair shops will inflate and rotate your tires for free with the oil change. That will keep your tires from wearing out prematurely.

Simply keeping your car and its undercarriage clean will keep it from rusting. Rust does not just eat away at the body of the car, it also eats away at the muffler, axles, tie rods, etc. causing them to fail.

There are two maintenance tips will not harm your car significantly if you do not do them, but will save you a lot of money if you do. They are replacing your air filter often and replacing your spark plugs periodically. A dirty air filter and clogged spark plugs will drastically reduce your gas mileage and cost you much money at the pump.

The bottom line is that if you take care of your car, it will take care of you. If you have not taken care of your car, it probably has developed an expensive problem. In that case, your best option is to donate your car to charity. New York: Hyundai Revealed Two Versions of the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

Hyundai has revealed two versions of the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe at the 2012 New York Auto Show. This includes the version which is capable of accommodating up to five passengers and the seven-passenger version.

The five-passenger version of this vehicle will go on sale in the month of September of this year. This will be introduced in the market as the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. This will be offered in two engine options. The base engine that would be used to power this model is the 2.4-liter in-line 4-cylinder engine. This engine is capable of producing up to 190 horsepower and about 180 lb.-ft. of torque. This is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission and a standard front-wheel drive system. The all-wheel drive system is also available as an optional feature.

The second engine used in the 5-passenger 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport is the company's own version of the turbocharged and direct-injected 2.0-liter in-line 4-cylinder engine that generates a maximum power output of 264 horsepower and 269 lb.-ft. of torque. Based on these figures, it is quite correct to assume that the turbocharged version is more powerful compared to the base engine-powered model.

In terms of projected fuel consumption, the base engine-powered model is considered as the most fuel-efficient. It obtained the estimated fuel economy ratings of 23 miles per gallon in the city, 31 miles per gallon on the highway, 25 miles per gallon when combined. The turbocharged version has obtained the ratings of 22 miles per gallon in the city, 31 miles per gallon on the highway, and 25 miles per gallon combined.

The seven-passenger version of the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe is considered as the regular-sized model on the line-up. This will serve as the replacement for the Hyundai Veracruz in January 2013. Hyundai has decided to stop the production of the Veracruz to give way for the larger version of the Santa Fe when the vehicle goes on sale early next year.

The seven-passenger Santa Fe will be powered by a 3.3-liter V-6 engine that was sourced from the Hyundai Azera. This engine is capable of producing up to 290 horsepower. Unfortunately, the torque generated by this model was not yet determined and so are the estimated fuel-economy ratings.  But despite of its failure to reveal the estimated fuel consumption of this vehicle, Hyundai has provided and assurance that this vehicle would surely be as efficient and likable just like the Hyundai Elantra and the Hyundai Sonata.

Due to this significant event in the history of this mid-size sedan, Nissan has bundled some of the most exciting features into this vehicle to attract more customers.

First off, Nissan has subjected the Altima sedan to a redesign. This simply means that the vehicle's exterior layout and design were somehow revised to provide the Altima with a fresher and a more competitive look. The 2013 Nissan Altima has also obtained a new set of projector-style headlamps that provide the vehicle with a more imposing aura, a new grille, and the new LED taillamps that are offered as standard features for the model's upper trim levels.

But despite of the redesigns that were implemented, the 2013 Nissan Altima has retained the wheelbase of its predecessor which is about 109.3 inches in length. The vehicle's tracks in front and rear has also grown by about 1.4-inches and this particular change was basically intended to improve the Altima's road performance.

Aside from retaining the previous model's wheelbase, Nissan has also decided to use the same 3.5-liter V-6 engine that was used by the previous year's model. This engine is capable of producing a maximum power output of up to 270 horsepower. But instead of using the same 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine on the 2013 Nissan Altima sedan, the company has revised this engine to further improve its performance. As a result, the maximum power output produced by the 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine was bumped from 175 to 182 horsepower.

Both of these engines are currently mated to a redesigned version of the "Xtronic" continuously variable automatic transmission. The modifications made on the transmission were basically conducted to boost the Altima's fuel economy regardless of the engine used. Fortunately, the modifications obtained some positive effects. As a result the 4-cylinder models obtained the improved fuel economy ratings of 27 miles per gallon in the city and 38 miles per gallon on the highway. The V-6 models on the other hand obtained the ratings of 22 miles per gallon in the city, and 30 miles per gallon on the highway.

Nissan has also extended the range of the 2013 Nissan Altima sedan. The model is now offered in seven trim levels. The 4-cylinder versions are available as the 2.5, 2.5 S, 2.5 SV, and the 2.5 SL model. The V-6 versions are divided into the 3.5 S, 3.5 SV, and the 3.5 SL models.

While buying, owning and driving a brand new car is a great experience, the sad truth is that some vehicles suffer high rates of depreciation in the first year that can often tarnish the joy of ownership. Despite the fact that purchasing a new car from a specialist in forces car sales can mitigate this to quite a large degree, as they can negotiate special prices for military personnel from car makers over and above those available to the general public, the fact remains that it often makes better economic sense to buy a relatively new car that has depreciated in price and offers better value-for-money.

Consider some of the benefits:

The manufacturer's warranty will be transferred to you. Most new cars have at least a 3- year warranty, many have 5-years or more and these longer warranties are increasingly popular as cars become more reliable and makers become more confident in providing them. This reassurance is especially important for military personnel who may be based overseas away from home and don't want their families to experience any problems with car maintenance issues while they are away.

Car makers often provide new-car rebates at certain times of the year, or discounts when they are trying to shift old models before the introduction of new ranges. These drive the prices of used cars down.

The optional equipment, exterior and interior finishes specified at great cost by the original owner are often undervalued on the used car marketplace.

Many pre-owned cars that come up for sale are ex-company leased, or private leased cars that have been returned for some reason. They are generally well maintained and looked after. Many will have been subject to mileage limitations, so high mileage should not be an issue.

To shift used cars quickly and without fuss, dealers will have given their vehicles a comprehensive inspection and a thorough clean inside and out. Apart from the mileage shown on the odometer, there is often very little visual difference between a new and pre-owned car and the driving experience should be pretty much the same.

Any problems that a new car owner may have had with their new car will generally have been fixed by the time they come to trade it in, allowing you to simply buy, drive and enjoy it.

Older used cars may not come with many of the benefits listed above and while their initial cost may be lower, the costs of maintenance and repairs can add up considerably within a few years.

Some car makers vehicles maintain high resale values over many years allowing you to reduce the overall cost of ownership.

Careful study of motoring magazines that publish used car guides will help you choose a make and model that's right for you. When you've shortlisted your favourite models and specifications, then ask your car dealer - preferably one that understands the needs of the military - to match your wish list with their stock.
